Problems with Apple IOS16 and .avif images

[This post is in English because there are many people around the world facing the same issue.]

Seeing question marks instead of images on your iPhone? That's probably because it's an .avif image and the recent iOS (>16) has troubles with that. Right after the launch of Apple's IOS 16, we saw many question marks at havendienst.nl while browsing it with an updated iPhone. In this blog post we tell you how we deal with this situation.

How do we handle image priority?

Havendienst.nl is using avif images and when a user doesn't support that, we offer a webp image. If the webp image is not supported, we offer the classic .jpg/.png/.gif image.

Examples of request headers

Your browser will send an 'accept' header with each request. An example of such an accept header (Chome v105 on Windows 10) can be:

Accept : text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,image/avif,image/webp,image/apng,*/*;q=0.8,application/signed-exchange;v=b3;q=0.9

As you can see, Chrome v105 on Windows 10 says that it handle avif images as well as webp and apng images.

Apple devices use a different request headers for different type of content. The following is an Example of an iPhone 11 running IOS16.02 doing a non-image request:

Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xm;q=0

When Apple IOS 16 devices request an image, they send avif in the request header which suggest that they fully support avif images. The opposite is true.

AVIF image support is broken on IOS 16

First, Apple doesn't seem to support animated avif images, only static ones.
Second, it doesn't support avif images when they are encoded in a HEIF container. Since most image optimizers/converters do this by default, most of your images will render as a question mark on iPhones.

Solution

There are a number of things you can do, including re-converting all your images with different settings. Another option is to wait for Apple to update it's IOS. Although the bug is still present in IOS 16.0.2.
A best-of-both-worlds solution would be to check on User-Agent and Request header. So don't only check for avif in the request header but also check for "iPhone OS 16" in the User agent, when that's the case.... serve it a webp or classic image.

Sync your Boat Calendar with your Smartphone or Watch

From now on, you can sync your boat's calendar with your calendar on your phone (iPhone or Android) or Watch.

You can easily see all bookings in your calendar App without having to log into the rental portal. Can't make it one day? Then easily block a day or a specific time. Your boat can then not be booked.

The calendar sync works even when you have multiple boats. You can also share the calendar with your friend or colleague so they can also view it on their smartphone.

Syn your boat calendar with your iPhone/Watch or Android!

How it works.
Almost everyone has a Google account, even if it is just to log into Youtube, for a Gmail address or for Google Drive.

  1. Click + next to Other Calendars to create a new calendar.
Go to calendar.google.com and click on + in addition to Other agendas. Create a new schedule, e.g., 'Boat Rental'.
  2. Log in to the rental portal and go to your boot settings. Under the tab: Google Calendar Sync click on Sign in with Google and then on Allow To allow Havendienst.nl to access your calendar.
  3. You will automatically return to the rental portal, if you go back to the tab Google Calendar Sync looks you can select which calendar your boat should be synchronized with, choose the calendar you created in step 1 and click Save.
  4. If you create a new item in the new calendar on your phone (make sure you create it in the right calendar), we will automatically block the boat for you during this period. You can create an item for a specific time, a specific day, multiple days or a recurrent day (every Monday) or time (always between 18:00-20:00). If you do this you will see in the rental portal that under the tab Availability a new line is created.

Sharing the synchronized calendar with your colleague or friend
You can add the calendar on your iPhone/Watch or Android. Via calendar.google.com You can also share your calendar with another Google Account (read-only or read/write rights). Just ask the other person which email address his/her Google Account is linked to.

Not seeing the calendar on your phone or Watch?
Sometimes it's necessary to check the box that Google should sync this new calendar to your phone in addition to the default calendar. You can do that here: calendar.google.com/calendar/syncselect tick.

If you can't figure it out you can always give us a call, we'll be happy to help you get it working!

Roadside Assistance is Live!

Roadside Assistance Map Netherlands - Havendienst
From today we offer Roadside Assistance without subscription in the following regions:

  1. Loosdrechtse ponds + Vecht
Loosdrechtse lakes, Kortenhoefse plassen, Vinkeveense Plassen, Scheendijk, Breukelenveen, the Vecht, Maarssen, Breukelen, Nieuwersluis, Loenen aan de Vecht, Vreeland, Nederhorst den Berg, Nigtevecht, Weesp and Muiden
  2. Friesland
Slotermeer, Tjeukermeer, Sneekermeer, Langweer, Akkrum, Grou and many more small towns, ditches and lakes in Friesland.

You only pay if you are unlucky and also at the lowest rates in the Netherlands!
Do you also want to become a roadside assistance or start a new roadside assistance region? Send us an email.

How it works.
Do you have Breakdown? Then go to Havendienst.nl and click on Roadside Assistance. Click on "Define my location" and fill in your information.
Tick if you think you have a dead battery, run out of fuel or want a tow (back) to your port.
To prevent false reports we ask for a deposit of € 25,- which you pay online with iDEAL or Credit Card.

All the roadside assistance providers who are in the area at that time get a Whatsapp notification. The one on it replies and you get an SMS that help is on the way. (Usually within a few minutes)
While the Roadside Assistance is on the road, it will contact you by phone.
You only settle the remaining amount when the Roadside Assistance (with a battery booster, a jerry can of gasoline or to give you a tow) arrives, which can be done in cash or with a Tikkie.
Is there no roadside assistance nearby or can we not help you? Then you get your deposit back!

Who is participating?
The Roadside Assistance providers consist of local marina employees, boat rental companies, enthusiastic boaters and (professional) boat mechanics.

How can it be so cheap?
The breakdown report is passed on directly to the Roadside Assistance that is nearby. Havendienst.nl is not in between with commissions. Even the down payment you make goes automatically to the Roadside Assistance provider.
We consider roadside assistance to be a service that is necessary to keep everyone sailing and to prevent problems. In this way we support the region including all harbors, boat rental companies and businesses around it.
We believe that people who help other people have every right to their compensation and that no one should be in between.

Alternatives
There are other services that will help you in case of breakdown on the water, we have listed them for you below.
Unfortunately, all the alternatives we could find are always subscription services, which is precisely why we started Havendienst Roadside Assistance.

Boat Watch

  • Subscription service that applies per person, per boat.
If you sail on a different boat or if someone else sails on your boat, you will not be helped.

  • Response time can be up to 24 hours.

  • No drags.

Sailing Confident

  • Expensive subscription service (Standard package for a 7 meter boat costs € 20,- per month, it is an annual contract and you pay even in winter)

  • The standard contract does not include fuel delivery.

  • In summer until 20:00 in the evening, outside summer until 18:00.

  • Response time is unclear, many complaints about long wait times.

I like to help people and since I'm as a walkaptain for Qrafter boatrental most of the time in Loosdrecht I signed up. Per report you get a nice amount of money and you really help someone with it.

An open platform is future proof

There are several boat rental platforms and over the past 10 years we have seen a lot of them pass by.
If you as a landlord have just got everything sorted, have the right photos of your boat on there and have completely adapted your process to the platform, then it happens. You suddenly hear that the platform has ceased to exist or has been taken over for a lot of money.

Boatsters only rents out yachts starting at half a million
It happened with boatsters.nl, which now only focuses on yachts around €500,000 per week and calls itself 'boatsters black'. At that moment also the cooperation between Boatsters and Nationale Nederlanden, which at that time offered a boat share insurance with the only approved platform being that of Boatsters, stopped immediately. Did you just adjust your boat insurance to the platform, the platform disappears.

Barqo goes for the money
It also happened last week with Barqo, which had acquired botentehuur.nl a few years earlier. Barqo had become one of the largest platforms in the Netherlands through that acquisition, meanwhile raising capital several times over with crowd funding actions and investors with the ultimate goal of selling itself. Meanwhile, Barqo (and thus botentehuur.nl) is part of the UK-based Borrow a Boat.

One of the reasons why Havendienst.nl as an open source platform was started is so that boat owners are no longer dependent on the whims and takeovers of commercial platforms. A boat owner wants stability and not to have to change everything every year. An open source boat rental platform where anyone can build and the majority of the developers are boat owners and rental companies themselves.
We believe in connections instead of takeovers. Are you renting your boat through Barqo? Then you can link your availability in real-time with Havendienst! So you don't even have to switch. Besides Barqo, Let's Book, GetYourGuide and Tripadvisor / Viator are also supported.
